This rapidly growing species is a good choice for planting in wet, heavy, poorly drained soils of bottomlands in the South. It is a consistent producer of abundant acorn crops fed on by ducks, deer, and squirrels. This species reaches a height of 80 feet and is a good shade tree. Some recent taxonomists now refer to this species as Q. texana.
